Abstract
The article presents an attempt to classify the assessments of the evolutionary process of the modern novel, proposed by French literary criticism. The novel form, remaining 180the leading genre and «expression of the century» (T. Eliot), goes through certain stages of transformation in parallel with changes of the postmodern paradigm from the concept of «the end of the novel», artistic anarchy, «poetic thinking» to the hybrid form and the idea of simulacrum reality; transition from minimalism to maximalism at the turn of the century. Rethinking the traditions of the Nouveau Roman, minimalists minimize artistic and pictorial means and return to the plot that becomes fragmentary and contradicts the traditional one. Political trends (Marxism, Maoism) of the twentieth century, superimposed on the literary practices of modern writers, lead to egalitarianism, multilingualism and cosmopolitanism of modern literature. The stylistics of hyperbolization, playing with language, gives rise to a polar concept, defined by literary scholars as maximalism.
