Abstract

This review summarizes current evidence on the effects of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) on mitochondrial bioenergetics in skeletal muscle. Particular attention is given to the molecular mechanisms underlying SARM-induced activation of the AR–PGC-1α signaling axis, stimulation of mitochondrial biogenesis, enhancement of oxidative phosphorylation, restoration of fatty acid β-oxidation, and attenuation of oxidative stress. Available preclinical and clinical data indicate that SARMs improve mitochondrial function and muscle energy metabolism, supporting their therapeutic potential in sarcopenia, cachexia, and metabolic disorders. However, further large-scale clinical studies are required to establish their long-term efficacy and safety.
