Abstract

The paper summarizes current scientific evidence on the role of the glutathione system in maintaining cellular redox homeostasis under conditions of oxidative stress. Glutathione is shown to be a key component of the antioxidant defense system, providing detoxification of reactive oxygen species, regulation of redox-dependent signaling, maintenance of cellular metabolism, and prevention of ferroptosis. The significance of the GSH/GSSG ratio as a sensitive indicator of the cellular redox state and the role of glutathione-dependent enzymes in preserving cell viability are highlighted. The analysis of recent scientific literature confirms that the glutathione system represents a promising therapeutic target for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases associated with impaired redox homeostasis.
