The effect of graphene....pdf Download (313kB) |
Abstract
This review summarizes current evidence on the effects of graphene and its derivatives on redox homeostasis and synaptic transmission in neurons. The main biochemical mechanisms underlying graphene-induced modulation of neuronal function are analyzed, including changes in mitochondrial redox balance, oxidative stress, ion channel activity, neurotransmitter release, and synaptic plasticity. Particular attention is paid to the concentration-dependent effects of graphene, demonstrating that low concentrations of functionalized graphene may activate antioxidant defense pathways and promote neuroplasticity, whereas higher concentrations induce mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage, and neurotoxicity. These findings highlight the dual biological activity of graphene and support its potential application in neuroscience and nanomedicine.
